Purpose of Evaluation

What is the purpose of the evaluation?

  • Two broad purposes of eduacational evaluation.
    • Formative evaluation - Intended to improve a program
      • It is carried out while the program is in progress and can be on going throughout the life of the program.
    • Summative evaluation - results in a definitive judgement about the value of a program.
      • A summative is carried out after a program has been in existence for a period of time.  It is usually the basic for a decision about whether the program will continue to undergo major revisions or be terminated.
